Both India and El Salvador established their diplomatic relations in 1979. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding on having regular consultations between their respective foreign ministries in 2004.

Bilateral trade between these two countries reached US$74.72 million from 2015 to 2016. Furthermore, India also exported goods of $68.54 to El Salvador and imported $6.18 million.
